We took a brief detour from our study of the earth today. Because many students are studying first aid for burns in health today, I decided to supplement their learning with a lab to demonstrate how different types of materials react to being burned. What we discovered:
In order for something to burn, oxygen, a source of heat, and something to burn (fuel) most all be present.
Plant materials, like cotton, burn "like a fireball", but burn very quickly.
Animal materials, like wool, burn while in the flame, but then go out quickly. They also stink!
Synthetic materials, like nylon, spandex, and under armor, melt and make a mess.
Mrs. Betournay joined us for our class. I think everyone enjoyed this activity.
