Plate Tectonic Theory

Students mapped a variety of earthquake and volcano locations on a map of the world. Once these locations were plotted, students were asked to see if any patterns were evident. None were readily apparent, but when a plastic transparency with plate boundaries was placed on top of the map, students discovered that most of the dots they plotted were either on or very near the plate edges. This is similar to the conclusion scientists came to when they proposed the original plate tectonic theory.
