Surf and Sand Toss and Spin!

Science
Students broke into two groups and gathered data about how much of the earth is covered with land and how much is covered with water. To do this, we tossed "earth balls" around in a circle and recorded where our right pointer finger landed. This information was shared with the class, and students filled in information onto a personally created chart. This information will be used again on Monday. We also worked in pairs to play a Surf and Sand spin game, determining latitudes and longitudes of different spins, and then used a map of the world to determine whether those places were on land or in the water.
Math

We converted the Surf and Sand Toss data into fractions, decimals, and percents. Our goal was to see how much of the earth is covered by water and how much is covered by land.
Tonight's Homework:

Science--Work on the yellow Slick Tracy activities, and try to get them done by Monday, October 24th.
Math--Use the map of the world in your planner to determine where each of the 20 locations you and your partner randomly spun are located, and record "land" or "water" on your Surf and Sand Spin worksheet. Finish the left hand column completely tonight. We'll do the right hand side tomorrow.
