Today, we looked at Investigation 3.3, which focuses on what it's like to multiply a mixed number by a fraction. This is more complicated, so we took some time developing a picture model to help many students see what is happening during this type of process. Others used the more traditional algorithm (converting mixed numbers into improper fractions and then multiplying. By the end of the period, most students were comfortable using both processes.
As for science, we finished folding our hexaflexagons. Students may now use these to help them learn more about the water cycle. We made mini-models of the water cycle in class, with each group being able to see examples of evaporation, condensation, and precipitation in their beaker on a portable electric stove top unit.
